Essay about The Genius that Was Pythagoras - 573 Words
What makes a person considered a genius? All of our opinions are different on what we think a genius is. For example, Einstein and Mozart were both considered geniuses but Mozarts talent came naturally where as Einstein had mentors help him along the way. Pythagoras was known as the first pure mathematician. So was Pythagoras considered a genius? Pythagoras was most well-known for what we know today as the Pythagorean Theorem and also that the sum of all the angles in a triangle is equal to two right angles. This is my reasoning on why I think Pythagoras was not considered what we think a genius is. Pythagoras was born around 569 BC on the island of Samos, Greece. When he was older he went to Crotone and this is where Pythagoras foundedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦These are some more things that Pythagoras was credited for: The sum of all the angles on a triangle is equal to two right angles, constructing figures of a given area and geometrical algebra, finding of irrational number s, the five regular solids, and that Earth was a sphere in the middle of the Universe. So, by the information above you would probably think that Pythagoras was considered a genius. Plus some of the things he was credited for were very unlikely that he even did them. For example the five regular solids (Tetrahedron, Cube, Octahedron, Icosahedron, and Dodecahedron) that he was credited for he only knew how to construct the first 3 above and not the icosahedron and the dodecahedron. (Douglass) Also his discovery of irrational numbers was highly unlikely due to his philosophy of all things are numbers and numbers to Pythagoras were the ratio of two whole numbers. So overall , I think Pythagoras was a very intelligent man. Pythagoras had to be very bright to be the master of the Pythagorean School and have one of his students be Plato, a famous Greek philosopher. But was he a genius? I think the Pythagorean Theorem was a genius theory and the Babylonians in Mesopotamia who did the the ory first should be considered geniuses, but not Pythagoras. I think this way mainly becauseShow MoreRelatedEssay on The Genius that Was Pythagoras1440 Words à |à 6 PagesPythagoras is truly a man unlike any other throughout history. Per- haps his greatest achievements are within the realm of mathematics; with his greatest known theory being the Pythagorean Theorem. His theory is so well..known that even today it peaks the interests of many mathematicians, with more than 400 proofs being spawned o of his original theorem. Though his theorem is common knowledge in this modern age, his life still remains a mystery to most, similar to most pre-Socratic philosophersRead MorePythagoras of Samos and His Theorem875 Words à |à 3 Pagesï » ¿Pythagoras of Samos and His Theorem Born on the Greek island of Samos around 570 BC, Pythagoras grew up and traveled widely before establishing a religious colony in Croton. His religious contributions and philosophy made more of an impact on his contemporaries than did his mathematical contributions. Yet, today he is remembered as the man behind the famous Pythagorean Theorem. This paper will examine both Pythagoras life and his gift to math. Little is known of the historical Pythagoras. Dunham focuses primarily on the worksââ¬â¢ and achievementsââ¬â¢ of early Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece in this section. These ancient societies, as they developed, produced mathematicians such as; Thales, Pythagoras, and Hippocrates, who turned a basic human intuition for space and quantity into applicable everyday mathematics. The primary influences drivingRead MoreEssay about Classical Philosophers1050 Words à |à 5 Pagesgolden age of Greece was an age of thinking, of knowledge, and of the arts. Some of the greatest minds of any time projected their ideas upon the masses. They were called philosophers. These were men whose minds developed som e of the most abstract and revolutionary ideas of the time. Sometimes described as the first pure mathematician, Pythagoras of Samos, was a very important developer of modern mathematics. Unfortunately there is, in comparison, little known about his and his followers achievements for they worked in a secret society where they kept strictly to themselves. An odd note about the details of Pythagoras s life is that the information that is written about him in early biographies is done so by authors whoRead More Human Gender and Mathematics Essay1381 Words à |à 6 PagesWomen were not encouraged to pursue a career in mathematics. Historically, women were seen working around the home, cleaning the house, taking care of the children, and cooking the food. Even if they did pursue a career in mathematics, their research was sometimes viewed as questionable.
